During the summer we love homemade “vitamin waters”. No need for sweeteners or chemicals, just good water and whatever you add into it. These waters are hydrating and delicious, and a wonderful way to wean off bottled drinks towards pure water. The number of people who simply don’t like plain water because their palates have been conditioned towards bottled and flavored beverages often surprises me. This is a great alternative to lemonade or smoothies - The possibilities are almost endless here so don’t hesitate to experiment. We drink a lot of this, so I usually make double the amount specified below. Make sure you use filtered water and organically grown fruits, vegetables and herbs for your homemade vitamin water.

Your Dog’s Most Neglected Daily Nutrient
Water is perhaps the most neglected daily nutrient your dog must count on for you to provide.
In fact, it’s so important and so vital that no dog could possibly survive deprived of it for long before dying a painful death.
Dogs need constant access to water. It must be served “ad libitum” — on demand — and immediately available whenever a dog’s natural urge to drink calls for it.
That’s because water is continuously being lost through the urine and feces.
And since dogs can’t sweat to stay cool, they lose a lot of moisture through the cooling effect of evaporation as they breathe and pant to control body temperature.
Unfortunately, many dog owners fail to provide fresh, adequate (and uncontaminated) water for their pet on a continuous basis.
And they’re simply unaware they’re doing anything wrong.
For example, how many times have you gone to the beach on a hot summer day — only to watch (in disbelief) as a dog pants in thirst.
While her owner sits under an umbrella, sipping a cold drink?
Others frequently neglect to properly maintain a dog’s water bowl. They allow the water bowl to become dangerously polluted with germs from the dog’s own mouth.
This hazardous situation is caused by using a water bowl that’s too small for the animal’s size. Or by allowing the water level in that bowl to become too low.
This can concentrate the germ population to a level high enough to cause disease.
And it can be aggravated by forgetting to wipe away the slimy, germ-laden “biofilm” from inside the water bowl — at least once each day.
The Bottom Line
The following recommendations can help ensure your dog stays adequately hydrated at all times…
If you wouldn’t drink it, why would you give it to your pet??

Warm weather brings with it thoughts of cool ocean breezes, napping in a hammock, and sipping a tall glass of lemonade. Now hold on to the mental image of that lemonade because summer is also a time to be wary of dehydration: the lack of sufficient water in the body.
Water is important to the body at all times, but especially in warm weather. It keeps the body from overheating. When you exercise, your muscles generate heat. To keep from burning up, your body needs to get rid of that heat. The main way the body discards heat in warm weather is through sweat. As sweat evaporates, it cools the tissues beneath. Lots of sweating reduces the body's water level, and this loss of fluid affects normal bodily functions.
Signs of dehydration
If you suspect that someone is dehydrated, seek immediate medical attention.
Signs of dehydration include:
How to avoid dehydration
According to the American College of Sports Medicine, to avoid dehydration, active people should drink at least 16- 20 ounces of fluid one to two hours before an outdoor activity. After that, you should consume 6 to 12 ounces of fluid every 10 to 15 minutes that you are outside. When you are finished with the activity, you should drink more. How much more? To replace what you have lost: at least another 16 to 24 ounces (2- 3 cups) .
One way to make sure you are properly hydrated is to check your urine. If it's clear, pale or straw-colored, it's OK. If it's darker than that, keep drinking!
Adequate hydration will keep your summer activities safer and much more enjoyable. If you need to increase your fluid intake, keep an extra pitcher of water with fresh lemons, limes, or cucumber in the refrigerator.

Water and Arthritis
Water does many things for our body. But for someone suffering from arthritis, one of the most important tasks H20 has is lubing up joints for maximum and pain-free movement. Arthritis, meaning "joint inflammation" is the general term for many sub-forms of the disease. There is rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis as well as gout, but these are just a few of the about 100 forms. About 43 millions Americans suffer from one form or another.
Arthritis involves the breakdown of cartilage. Cartilage normally protects a joint, allowing it to move smoothly. Without the normal amount of cartilage the bones rub together and cause pain. Symptoms of arthritis cause joint pain, swelling, stiffness, limited movement, redness of the skin around the joint, and warmth around a joint. Arthritis, as well as osteoporosis, has been linked with fluoride exposure which seems to aggravate and increase the activity of rheumatoid arthritis. It is a known fact that higher doses of fluoride ingestion can weaken bones and ligaments.
Water Can Provide Joint Pain Relief and Healing
Since arthritis pain and stiffness is a result of joints not being properly cushioned, water can help by lubricating and providing padding for these areas. Also, these symptoms are a result of increased friction between the cartilage surfaces. When the joints move, a suction pulls water from the bone marrow to the joint cavity-- if there is available water. If there is not enough water, the joints can't glide as they should. So, an increased water intake and being hydrated can keep that water supply there-- and reduce some of the pain. Lack of hydration will produce friction and shearing stress at the contact point of the joint. In the case of severe dehydration, dry cartilage may die and peel from their contact surface of the bones. Also, with gout, it can also remove uric acid and other toxins. Gout is a painful disease that is caused by deposits of uric acid crystals in the bloodstream, ending up in the joints of the body. It is characterized by pain, swelling, redness, and heat/inflammation as well as stiffness in a joint or joints. Gout is also a form of arthritis, or inflammation of the joints, and is more common for men. Water will also provide relief for people suffering from gout.
Exercise to Strengthen your Bones and Muscles
Like in osteoporosis, water exercise is also a very effective means of both reducing pain and staying in shape. When one has arthritis, they usually do not want to move their joints more than they have to. However, if staying in one place too long, the ligaments can tighten causing more pain. Regular exercise can help with flexibility and strength, as well as get the body in shape to do everyday tasks. Water exercise is a gentle way to exercise joints and muscles. Just being in the water allows the muscles to relax. The soothing heat and buoyancy of warm water make it a safe, ideal environment for relieving arthritis pain and stiffness. Also, water creates resistance which builds muscle strength. Using a spa can massage your body and help you relax tight muscles.
Living Comfortably with Arthritis
To summarize, arthritis is a disorder that can be treated and managed with proper care, nutrition and exercise. Water plays a big role and people with joint pain should make sure they are well hydrated at all times and avoid drinking fluoridated tap water. Exercise is also beneficial. Just because you have arthritis does not mean you must limit all movement, so go and enjoy more relaxing exercises such as walking, yoga, swimming, and golf!
Kick your water up a notch with these 11 homemade, natural infusions.

Staying properly hydrated is important for your overall health, but let’s face it — plain water can get pretty boring. Spruce up your water to make drinking it more appealing and also to gain nutritional benefits. Add an extra punch to your water with our infusion ideas.
Establish a Routine to Get Your Water in
One of the trickiest parts of getting enough water each day is simply remembering to drink it. Set alarms on your phone to remind you, download an app to track your intake or simply pre-fill water bottles with the desired amount and drink them by the end of the day. Find a routine that works for you.
How to Infuse Water
Infuse by adding one part ingredients, two parts water and one part ice. Leave the mixture in the fridge overnight. You can also use one part ingredients and three parts ice for a slower infusion. Some tasty ingredients you can use to infuse your water include:
Add fresh herbs (they must be fresh) to the fruit-infused water for a hint of complexity. This is a great option for when you have a little extra time to mix and muddle. The more you muddle, the more flavorful the water will be.
Fruit and herbs go very well together, so mix and match any of these combinations:
Harmful effects of Fluoride in your Babies Drinking Water
Baby drinking formula made with fluoridated water receives a very high dose of fluoride. This is because fluoridated water contains 200 to 250 times more fluoride than breast milk and, unlike other age groups, a newborn infant’s entire caloric intake comes from liquid.
The provision of fluoridated water to infants presents an historically unnatural situation for a baby. This is evident when considering that a breast-fed baby receives the lowest dose of fluoride, adjusted for bodyweight, among all groups in the population. By contrast, a baby consuming formula made with fluoridated water receives the highest dose in the population.
Due to this historically unnaturally dose, it is now known that children who received fluoridated formula as infants have significantly higher rates of dental fluorosis on their front teeth, a defect of the enamel that can lead to embarrassing white splotches and brown stains. Other emerging health concerns from infant fluoride exposure include reduced IQ and thyroid impairment.
Based on the clear fluorosis risk, and the lack of benefit from ingesting fluoride, a large number of dental researchers now recommend that parents use water that is low in fluoride when using formula to feed their baby. Now that this information has begun to make its way into the public discourse, a number of areas in the United States have issued public warnings. In June of 2012, the State of New Hampshire passed a bill requiring water companies to notify parents of the infant fluorosis warning. The City of Milwaukee and State Department of Health in Vermont have issued similar warnings.
The following are some of the warnings and recommendations made by
dental organizations and dental researchers:
The Warnings & recommendations:
“When formula concentrations need to be diluted, it is recommended parents use bottled water that is fluoride-free or low in fluoride or tap water from a reverse osmosis home water filtration system, which removes most of the fluoride.
SOURCE: Academy of General Dentistry. “Monitor Infant’s Fluoride Intake.”
“Infants less than one year old may be getting more than the optimal amount of fluoride (which may increase their risk of enamel fluorosis) if their primary source of nutrition is powdered or liquid concentrate infant formula mixed with water containing fluoride…
If using a product that needs to be reconstituted, parents and caregivers should consider using water that has no or low levels of fluoride.”
SOURCE: American Dental Association (2006). Interim Guidance on Reconstituted Infant Formula. November 9, 2006.
“A major effort should be made to avoid use of fluoridated water for dilution of formula powders. In addition, when economically feasible, young infants fed formulas prepared from concentrated liquids should have these formulas made up with non-fluoridated water.”
